Caller ID Name (CNAM) — How It Works

When you call someone, your business name can appear on their phone alongside your number. This is called CNAM — short for Caller ID Name. This article explains how CNAM works, why it may not always display correctly, and what to do if it needs to be updated.

📞 What Is CNAM?

CNAM is the business name that appears on someone's phone when you call them — for example, LINEONE LLC or ACME PLUMBING. It's separate from your phone number and is stored in a national database that phone carriers look up when an incoming call arrives.

LineOne sets your CNAM when your phone system is provisioned, typically to your registered business name.

⚙️ How It Works

When you place a call, the receiving carrier queries a CNAM database to find the name associated with your number. If a match is found, that name displays on the recipient's phone. If no match is found — or if the carrier doesn't perform the lookup — only your number will appear.

💡 Important: LineOne submits your CNAM to the national database, but we do not control how or when individual carriers retrieve and display it. That is entirely up to each carrier.

🔄 Why It May Look Different on Some Calls

It's common for CNAM to display correctly on some calls but show an old name, a number only, or nothing at all on others. There are a few reasons this happens:

  • Carrier caching — Carriers store CNAM data locally and only refresh it periodically. Some refresh every few days, others every few weeks. Until a carrier updates its cache, it will show whatever name it last recorded.
  • Propagation time — After a CNAM update is submitted, it can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks before all carriers reflect the change. This is normal and expected.
  • Carrier choice — Not all carriers perform CNAM lookups. Some simply display the number with no name, regardless of what's in the database.

If your CNAM looks correct on landline calls but wrong on others, this is almost always a carrier caching issue that will resolve on its own over time.

📱 Cell Phones Are a Special Case

Wireless carriers handle CNAM very differently from landline and VoIP carriers. Most major wireless carriers do not support inbound CNAM lookups at all — meaning cell phone recipients will typically see only your phone number, or a city and state, regardless of what your CNAM is set to.

This is a limitation of the wireless carrier network, not your phone system or your CNAM record. There is no fix for this on our end.

⚠️ Note: If a client or customer tells you your name isn't showing up on their cell phone, this is expected behavior — not an error.

✏️ Requesting a CNAM Update

If your CNAM is incorrect, outdated, or needs to be changed, contact LineOne support and we'll submit the update to the national CNAM database on your behalf.

Keep in mind:

  • Updates typically begin appearing within a few days but can take up to several weeks to fully propagate across all carriers.
  • Cell phones may never reflect the update due to wireless carrier limitations.
  • LineOne cannot expedite carrier propagation — once submitted, the timeline is out of our hands.
