Offline Destination & Business Continuity
Your LineOne phone system runs over the internet, which means it depends on an active internet and power connection to function. This article explains what happens when that connection is lost, how your offline destination protects your business, and how to keep it up to date.

π Why VoIP Phones Require Internet
Unlike traditional landlines that carry their own signal through a physical copper wire, VoIP phones send and receive calls as data over your internet connection. This means that if your internet goes down β or if your power goes out β your phones go with it.
This is a fundamental characteristic of cloud-based phone systems, not a limitation specific to LineOne. The good news is that LineOne builds a safety net into every system to protect your business when this happens.
π What Is an Offline Destination?
During your initial programming call, LineOne configures an offline destination for your account. This is an external phone number β typically a cell phone or another number outside your VoIP system β that your inbound calls automatically route to if your phones are detected as unreachable.
Here's how it works:
- A caller dials your business number as normal.
- LineOne's system detects that your phones are offline or unreachable.
- The call is automatically forwarded to your offline destination β no action needed on your end.
- Your callers reach a real person (or voicemail) instead of getting a busy signal or dead air.
π‘ Tip: Your offline destination should be a number that will reliably be answered during business hours β typically a manager's cell phone or an answering service. Avoid using another VoIP number that would also be down in an outage.
π A Note on Power and PoE Phones
Most Yealink desk phones used on the LineOne system are powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) β meaning they receive power through the network cable from your switch or router, rather than a separate power adapter.
This is convenient, but it means that if your network switch loses power, your phones go offline even if your internet connection is still active. A few things worth knowing:
- A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) on your network switch can keep your phones running during a brief power outage, buying time for a generator to kick in or for the outage to resolve.
- If your switch is powered down during maintenance, your phones will go offline until it comes back up.
- During any planned outage, it's a good idea to notify LineOne so we can temporarily route calls to your offline destination manually if needed.
βοΈ Updating Your Offline Destination
If your offline destination number changes β for example, if a manager leaves, or you want calls routed to a different number β it's important to keep it updated so your backup routing works when you need it most.
You can update your offline destination by contacting LineOne support. Just let us know the new number and we'll update it in your system configuration.
